Home Energy Tip:
Spring AC Maintenance
The air conditioner is one of the biggest energy hogs around the house. It double or triple the electric bill in the hottest times of summer. Any leaks in refrigerant and the bill will sky rocket even higher. Each spring before the temperature starts to warm, do a little servicing of the air conditioner system. Use the following checklist to get your unit in top shape:
-Remove power to the condensor (outside part of AC system) and clean the coils. Take care not to bend the fragile fins. Inspect the pipe insulation and replace, if needed.
-Clean the dust off of the evaporator (inside part of the AC system) coils. Again, be careful with the fins.
-Inspect the connections and piping for any oily spills that would indicate a refrigerant leak. A professional will be required to fix this problem.
-Clean the vents and change out the air filters.
-Make sure the area around the condenser is clear of contact from bushes and trees. Trees or any other objects providing shade will help as long as there is no contact.
-Use a level to check that the condenser is balanced on the concrete slab.
