Home Energy Tip:
Automated Light Switches
Sick of the kids not switching off the lights as they leave the room? Try using an automated switch that utilizes motion detectors. It is a simple part that costs $10-15 that can be found in most hardware stores. Replacing the switches is easy but make sure you remove power by way of the breaker box.
The energy efficiency numbers are small when dealing with lighting. The numbers have to examined on a yearly basis to see whether there is a cost benefit. If the room has three 60 watt light bulbs that are left on just one hour extra a day it'll cost $6.57 extra a year (assuming 10 cents per Kilowatt hour). It's not very impressive but it does make the motion sensor energy efficient switch worth it over the years.
